Project AllerShield
Strengthening Crossborder Solutions for Managing Allergenic Plants and Enhancing Climate Resilience.
Programme priority: 2 - Green investments in environmental protection and efficient risk management.
Project summary
Invasive alien species (IAS) are one of the biggest causes of biodiversity loss and species extinctions, they can negatively affect health (cause pollen allergies) and are also a global threat to food.
AllerShield aims to monitor and assess the impact of climate change and potential air pollutants on air quality, including the concentration of allergenic pollen (especially pollen originating from invasive plant species) using innovative technology.
To achieve its objectives, AllerShield will develop balanced planning Strategy and Action Plan that benefit both air quality and sustainable biodiversity status. By understanding the relationships between air quality and biodiversity, the project will contribute to the development of integrated policies focused on limiting the spread of invasive species and mitigating anthropogenic pressure on the environment.
The distribution of the project's results will provide real-time information to citizens, tourists, allergy sufferers, and public health authorities. This information will help individuals better plan their daily activities, free time, or annual vacations, taking into account air quality and health risks. Furthermore, the project's findings will be applied in the development of policies, measures, and practices in the economy, agriculture, health, and tourism sectors.
In terms of implementation, AllerShield will utilize innovative technology and monitoring methods to gather data on air pollen pollution. This will involve the use of advanced monitoring devices, data analysis techniques, and the integration of information from multiple sources. Transnational cooperation among partners from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro is crucial for the success of the project, as it allows for the exchange of expertise, data sharing, and collaboration in research and monitoring activities. By combining the efforts and knowledge of multiple stakeholders, AllerShield can develop comprehensive strategies that address the common challenge of monitoring and mitigating the impacts of climate change, air pollutants, on human health and the environment.
